The Tao cannot be an object of study. By its very definition, the Tao excludes such a possibility. The Tao is not an object. The concept of the Tao, however, can be studied, though never understood. The assertion that the Tao is understood is also excluded by its very definition. An object cannot understand or contain its source. A person is an object. To claim that we understand the Tao is a lie—Maya. It may be good to gather disciples, make friends or party talk, but is an obstacle to Self-realization.
